RE: Help Needed Quickly: New DirecTV Install Problem

Another alternative would be to try Dish Network, lots of HD there. If THAT is blurry, it's gotta be cabling or something. But that'd get him another dish, new LNBs and a new receiver. Phil

RE: rubber shackles

I've had the VelvetRide shackles on my '91 K2500 for maybe ten years. The ride improved a lot. I also have Rancho 9000 shocks on the rear and set them to "1" (the softest setting) when driving empty. I started looking for a set to install on my Ford but couldn't find Velvet Ride anywhere, but finally located the site for Sulastic shackles and anticipate installing a set in the coming months. Phil

RE: Inverter low voltage problem when starting the generator.

I don't think installing a capacitor would help at all. If you install a UPS then your inverter will be expending power to "charge" the UPS batteries. I vote for smkettner's suggestion that you move the source for the generator starting to the vehicle battery. Depending on how the rest of the unit is wired, it should still charge your deep-cycle batteries even tho it pulls its starting voltage from the vehicle. It may very well charge your vehicle battery too when it's running. Phil

RE: Fleetwood Slideout Leak

I'll just pass on to you the solution to the leak we had in our slide-out. It too was VERY difficult to find. The slideout has windows on both "ends". The sheetmetal on both ends is flat, unlike the sides of the RV. The windows are installed into the ends with the typical rubber molding. The internal construction doesn't have enough bracing inside the walls. That is, I found that if I applied pressure just above each window seal I could depress the outside wall slightly. This slight gap allowed water to seep into the wall above the window seal and eventually leak to the carpet at the bottom of the wall. This was HARD to find. Easy to fix tho. I resealed the window rubber moldings with clear silicone and haven't had a problem since. In other words, I "glued" the rubber seal to the exterior wall to stop the leak. This may or may not help with your leak, but if not it might help when someone else does a search and finds this thread. Phil

RE: Sea Perch RV park

Thanks for the feedback, My wife is willing to put up with the wind because she wants to be close to the beach which apparently we are. How are the roads (138 and 101) after you leave Interstate 5 I would question whether you are close to the "beach" because as I remember it's only rocks and surf. And wind. Phil

RE: Cisco Grove - TNF EIS Comments

Ok, I've sent them my personal comments and received the 'verifications'. Hope it helps. I asked that instead of closing trails, they increase penalties for those that don't "tread lightly". I hope others will help. Once these trails and roads are closed they'll NEVER be allowed to open up again. Phil

RE: Sea Perch RV park

We stayed one night there a year ago. It was ok but we wouldn't go back.... too windy! We'd planned ahead, like you are doing, and booked it without seeing. It IS close to the ocean. No trees, grass between spaces, and the wind is one of the standard features of the Oregon coast. We found better places when we were able to explore. You shouldn't have any problem with the long fiver tho. Phil

RE: unplugging a television

I'm off grid and switch off all entertainment plugs every night. Been off grid for over 30 years and never had any "early" failures, actually I think just the opposite (but that can only be a guess, of course). Only failure I've ever had was a convergence amp in a 7 yr old Toshiba projection TV, and that problem is a common one on those units and I just had to replace an IC and one resistor. I think it made no difference powering down every night as that amp only operates when the set is on anyway. Phil

RE: TV Converter Box Review

Thanks, Wadcutter. With your suggestion I did some searches and unless other posters have better suggestions, I'll be visiting Best Buy soon. The reviews of the Insignia are all high (except one that died after a week and he had tossed his receipt). Phil

RE: TV Converter Box Review

Sluggo, Can you post the power consumption for those two units please? I'm 'on the fence' about getting one. It'd be the RCA after reading your review but I was also looking at a Zentech and the DTV Pal. I already have my coupon. I saw some posts a few weeks ago about the DTV Pal and how people add cooling holes because it gets pretty warm. This tells me it used a lot of power, "a lot" being in relation to my RV's battery charge life. My RV TV uses about 160 watts and if a converter added 50 watts, for instance, I'd be inclined to pony up $350 and buy a low end LCD TV.... I've seen some that use only 50 watts. That'd be only 1/4 of the power usage and the charge would last longer, meaning less generator use as we usually boondock. Since I have until February, I'm counting on some great deals around or after Christmas. But if these converters use only 5 or 10 watts, I'll get one and save some money. I've sent queries to online sellers with no responses. Thanks in advance, Phil

RE: Improve your Dodge 3500 ride while pulling your 5er?

I got an excellent ride on my '91 K2500 by 1) adding VelvetRide shackles, which aren't available anymore but these are Sulastic springs ; 2) adding a MorRyde pin box and 3) using Rancho adjustable 9000 shocks. I replaced trucks recently and have installed new shocks, still have the MorRyde pinbox on our trailer, and now just need to buy and install the Sulastic shackles. Phil

RE: Has anyone replaced their noisy oven exhaust fan?

I installed two Radio Shack muffin fans in our last fiver. I mounted them side by side using silicone just before the outside vent. We were living in that trailer full time for 6 years and they were still working a decade later after we'd just been using it for camping. They were so quiet that I had to put a light on the front so we'd know when they were "on". Phil

RE: Komfort Wiring Diagram

The only time I've seen a wire NOT going through the fuses was on my last fiver for the landing legs, and you posted in the TT forum so I'm ruling that out. enblethen's idea makes sense but only if there is an inline fuse somewhere farther on that wire, as there was on my fiver's landing leg wire. I would suggest cutting the wire and putting an inline fuse in it, but after cutting it find out what ISN'T working. Phil

RE: Dealerships bankrupt and not paying off trade-in loans!

I'm going through this right now. Bought a new-to-me truck (in sig) in July, dealer closed up a few weeks later. In talking with the DMV investigator, liabilities are well over a million not only with the cars they sold not being paid for (my case), but as you say they took trades saying they'd pay 'em off, and didn't. The investigator says he has a whole lot of those trade-ins that the dealer didn't pay off. Fortunately I didn't trade anything in. Dealers are required in CA to have a $50,000 bond but even IF it was in force, it's still not going to go far toward the debts... pennies on the dollar. The investigator says this ISN'T the worst case he's had tho. A dealer friend says this is happening a lot and will probably get worse before it gets better. Phil

RE: FW Hitch Installation

I agree with "everything you've read" too. Find the installation instructions for your hitch and they'll say 1" ahead of rear axle. Your hitch weight is levering your front end up, and in slick conditions you may have a problem since the weight on your front axle is less. Phil

RE: File on Insurance or out of pocket ?

Texas is different than all the other states when it comes to insurance. In California, it would be a comprehensive claim, since you said you "dropped the fiver on the truck". I didn't read where you were driving it at all, unless you edited your post. One of the perils that comprehensive covers is "damage from falling objects". I've seen it happen, and also saw it covered under comprehensive, and also saw that the premiums didn't go up at renewal. Phil

RE: Spell Check Gone

down load (www.iespell.com) then after you get threw typing a reply just right click and it will check the spelling and offer replacement spelling, Richard I'll second Richard's suggestion. I've been using iespell for years. No computer issues at all. Plus you can use it anyplace, as in any forum you might be posting at. Phil

RE: Squirrels

Depending on your neighborhood, if you can, leave the hood open partially. I discovered this a few years ago after a tow for chewed fuel pump relay wire. Last year a friend noticed and since he's from farm country, commented that all the farms around his neck of the woods had hoods open on everything that wasn't being used. If you are concerned about battery theft, rig a chain/padlock so the hood is only open 8 or 9 inches. Phil
